Summary

Literature review

Benefits of smart farms include increased productivity, optimized resource management, reduced operational costs, improved crop quality.

Smart farming is also known as Precision agriculture. It's a management concept focused on providing the agricultural industry with the infrastructure to leverage advanced technology.

The driving force of smart farming is IoT — connecting machines and sensors integrated on farms to make farming processes data-driven and automated

Smart farming

Smart farming focuses on managing farms, plantations, and all associated farming activities using IoT, drones, robotics, machinery, and artificial intelligence, to determine a path to predictable farm output.

Crop production

process

  • To gain a comprehensive understanding of agricultural practices, it's important to observe it from systemic perspective to reveals the interconnectivity of the various components necessary for optimal performance.

  • In order to simplify the assessment of farming practices, I have identified three distinct phases: pre-farming activities, farming activities, and post-farming activities.

Pre-farming

activites

  1. Preparation of soil : a ploughing, soil levelling, applying fertiliser

  2. Selection of seed : quality of seed, quantity of seed, preparation for a seed sowing

Farming

activites

  1. Sowing of seed

  2. Manuring

  3. Irrigation

  4. Weeding

  5. Pest control

  6. Monitoring

Post-farming

activites

  1. Harvesting

  2. Threshing

  3. Winnowing

  4. Storage

Analysis

The detailed mapping of farming activites helped in combining activities in catoegries for better visualisation for the Dasboard design.

Define

As per the specifications outlined in the design challenge brief, it is imperative that the Mr.Clark (farm manager) be equipped with smart technology to effectively operate all devices in a highly efficient manner.

Scenario

Clark was notification that severe heat waves were expected the following week. To protect his crops from the potentially harmful impact of such weather conditions, he is currently working on a plan to determine the optimal moisture levels in the soil. Additionally, he is making sure his irrigation system operates at maximum efficiency.

GOAL

  • Quick and easier decision-making

  • Maintaining crop hydric status and irrigation system

  • maintain moisture level in soil

  • protect crop from extreme climate

TASK

  • Schedule and activate an irrigation system for a week based on the weather forecasting

  • make irrigation system more dynamic

  • detail report of soil & crop health

Need & requirement

Early detection of extreme situations to preventing crop any harm.

A Tool that assists in managing such situations and easy to learn & operate

Toolkit and guide available for reference during extreme situations.

Ideate

According to the given situation, Mr. Clark needs a tool that can warn or inform him beforehand about impending severe weather conditions, such as heat waves. This will help him protect his farm from any potential harm.

Solution

Early alert

An early alert and notification is sent to inform individuals of the potential risk of crop damage.

Climate-farm management

An aid in the task of managing agricultural risk that can assist individuals or organisations involved in the agricultural industry to minimise or mitigate potential risks associated with climatic variability that can negatively impact agricultural productivity, profitability, and sustainability.

Tool

Assessment report

A comprehensive assessment report to evaluate the potential impact and aid in the prioritisation of tasks and allocation of suitable resources.

Mitigation plan

The automatic layout of a mitigation plan entails the systematic process of reducing the impact of potential risks.

Process flow

Information architecture

A well-planned and systematic approach has been developed to ensure that Mr. Clark, can efficiently execute all the essential tasks required to safeguard the crops from the extreme heat waves.
